18 Week Patient Pathway

Please note that the 18 Week Patient Pathway e-learning programme is currently not available for use. We are working with NHS England to review and update the programme. We estimate that the revised programme will be available for use in spring 2017.

These e-learning sessions deliver the basic knowledge and understanding of the 18 Week Patient Pathway. They are designed to be used by a variety of staff, including booking clerks, clinical coders, clinicians and commissioners, working across a wide range of organisations.

The NHS has made vast improvements in waiting times over the past few years. Feedback from patients, and other evidence, suggests 18 weeks is the length of time that patients see as an acceptable wait for non-emergency consultant-led treatment. The 2004 NHS Improvement Plan set out the idea for reform: "By 2008, no one will have to wait longer than 18 weeks from GP referral to hospital treatment."

The aim is to assist all staff in getting to grips with the basics of this process through short interactive learning sessions that are useful and enjoyable!
