e-Learning for Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)
DoLS image(Modules for Mental Health Assessors)

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) are new measures to protect people who lack the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves. They come into effect in April 2009 using the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and apply to people in situations in care homes or hospitals where they are being deprived of their liberty.

e-Learning for Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards will:

  • Define the overall position of DoLS in relation to mental health legislation
  • Equip learners with the knowledge they need to undertake the role of a mental health assessor in relation to DoLS

Who are the modules designed for?

The training is designed for two groups of medical practitioners:

  • Medical practitioners who have at least three years post registration experience of the diagnosis or treatment of a mental disorder from a variety of medical specialties. These doctors need to successfully complete both modules
  • MHA approved Section 12 doctors (psychiatrists and non-psychiatrists). These doctors only need to successfully complete module 2
