About the Digital Clinical Safety training programme
The elearning course has been developed by the Digital Clinical Safety Informatics Team at NHS England in partnership with NHS England elearning for healthcare. The elearning is designed to support health and social care organisations and manufacturers of health IT products with training in the principles of Clinical Risk Management (CRM) in the context of the health IT safety standards DCB 0129 and DCB 0160.
The safety standards provide a requirements framework that supports a systematic approach to CRM during the development and use of health IT systems. The standards determine the need for organisations to establish a CRM system, appoint appropriate resources, conduct particular activities and produce evidence of having done so.
About Essentials of Digital Clinical Safety
Healthcare provision and delivery within the NHS today is highly dependent on information technology, which includes sophisticated systems and services. Healthcare is an integrated and complex “system of systems”, with a patient’s care pathway supported by technology and different services. Whilst the use of health IT can deliver significant healthcare benefits, failure or unintended use of health IT systems has the potential to introduce hazards and associated patient harm.
This elearning programme was developed with the Digital Clinical Safety Informatics Team at NHS England and aims to support a culture of digital clinical safety across NHS organisations. It is designed to support health and social care organisations and manufacturers of Health IT to ensure that all members of staff within the organisation have an awareness of digital clinical safety.
Those working within digital clinical safety, including clinicians, staff in administrative roles, project managers and testers may find the programme useful. Learners can expect an interactive learning experience, with questions to assess their knowledge. A certificate will be available to download and print after completing the elearning programme.
The programme is also available via the Electronic Staff Register (ESR) and AICC.

Digital Clinical Safety - Intermediate
About Digital Clinical Safety training: Refresher
The session should only be undertaken if both of the following prerequisites have been completed:
- Digital Clinical Safety – Intermediate e-learning
- Attended the Digital Clinical Safety – Practitioner course
This session has been designed to update Clinical Safety Officers and digital clinical safety specialist in supporting adherence to the DCB safety standards and to remain knowledgeable in the application of CRM during the development, implementation and deployment of health IT.
The session is based on a care scenario and will explore how to follow a CRM process by undertaking a series of activities and being able to list, develop and maintain safety documentation through a project’s life cycle. Particular attention will be given to accurate hazard identification and description and how to evidence effective mitigation from initiating to decommissioning health IT systems.
There will be an assessment at the end of the session to confirm that learners have understood the CRM process and associated activities in line with the DCB standards.

Digital Clinical Safety - refresherModule 3
Virtual and face to face courses available
1. Practitioner course
Also known as the ‘Foundation course’, this virtual/face-face workshop-based course is designed for those working in a direct digital clinical safety role or supporting those in a safety role. The training will provide learners with the knowledge and tools to undertake the required clinical risk management activities and documentation.
This course is a follow on to the Intermediate course for those looking to become a Clinical Safety Officer. The course starts at 9.15am for registration, finishing no later than 3pm.
2. Digital Clinical Safety Community of Practice Course
The Clinical Safety Community of Interest Course (CSCOI), previously known as the Revalidation Course.
The course contains:
- emphasis on sharing best practice and networking;
- case studies presented by members of the clinical safety community
- recent developments in health IT, including a key speaker where possible.
This course is intended for both clinicians and non-clinicians.

NHS healthcare staff in England
The Digital Clinical Safety Training programme is also available to NHS healthcare staff via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). Accessing this elearning via ESR means that your completions will transfer with you throughout your NHS career.

If you are not an NHS health or care organisation and therefore do not qualify for free access elfh Hub, you may be able to access the service by creating an OpenAthens account.
