About the Insights from SHOT for Safer Transfusion programme

This programme aims to give the learner an overview of what haemovigilance is, how it is covered in the UK and how to optimise learning from the annual SHOT reports to improve current practice in transfusion medicine. It also aims to illustrate the process when an incident is reported to SHOT by encouraging participation in various case studies to gain insight into the SHOT reporting categories by linking them to real patient scenarios. This course also explores key SHOT recommendations to enhance safe transfusion practice and links to further free learning resources available on the website.

Learning objectives include:

• Gain insight into what HV (haemovigilance) is, improve awareness and describe how it is covered and managed in the UK
• Understand what SHOT do and the scope of work
• Explore what is reported to SHOT, how the reporting process works and how this is undertaken
• Explore how the data and resources from SHOT can be used to enhance transfusion safety
• Facilitate and optimise learning from HV to overall patient safety
• Gain an understanding of how the SHOT reporting process works i.e., what is reported to SHOT, how and why
• Analyse a series of case studies and apply the correct reporting category to the scenario
• Review the impact of Organisational safety, Leadership, and culture on the reporting of transfusion related incidents
• Explore the steps when investigating a transfusion incident
• To understand how the data and resources from SHOT can be used to enhance transfusion safety
• To facilitate and optimise learning from haemovigilance to improve patient safety

Healthcare professionals involved in transfusion – nursing staff, laboratory staff, clinicians, transfusion practitioners, as well as haemovigilance and risk management specialists.
