About the National Data Opt-out Training

This programme, developed in partnership with NHS Digital, is designed to provide trust and protection for the use of confidential patient information throughout health and care services.

Patients should be assured that those involved in handling and processing their data respect their choices about whether to share it for purposes beyond their individual care, such as for research or managing local services.

The National Data Opt-out was introduced in England on 25 May 2018, from which point NHS Digital has been applying national data opt-outs to its data disseminations.

The Department of Health and Social Care requires all health and social care organisations to comply with national data opt-out policy by March 2020 – as set out in the information standard: DCB3058 Compliance with National Data Opt-outs. Compliance by this date also ensures organisations can complete the evidence item “compliance with national data opt-out policy” in the Data Security and Protection toolkit.

The programme consists of a single session – ‘National Data Opt-out Training’. The programme should take no longer than 45 minutes to complete.
