About the Public Health Ethics programme

In 2020 Health Education England commissioned research into resources which provide public health specialists and practitioners with the necessary knowledge and competencies for good public health practice as required by the UK Faculty of Public Health and UKPHR. This elearning programme was developed to provide vital continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities for the core and wider public health workforce.

There are 3 sessions available in the programme:

  • An introduction to public health ethics
  • Some basic theoretical underpinnings
  • Frameworks and case studies

These sessions align with the requirements of the UK Faculty of Public Health Specialist Training Curriculum, the Good Public Health Practice guidelines and the UKPHR practitioner standards to practice professionally; ethically and legally.

The 2022 public health specialty training curriculum specifically highlights public health ethics as a cross cutting theme in the curriculum and that All public health professionals must be able to recognise and practise within the ethical, legal and regulatory boundaries” and “the curriculum will be working towards ensuring that registrars learn about and reflect on ethical dimensions across public health practice.

In key area 9 on “Professional personal and ethical development (PPED)”, which maps to domains 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 GMC Generic Professional Capabilities, ethics of public health practice is highlighted as an area of the knowledge base.

Each session takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and a certificate is available to download on completion of each session, to evidence CPD.
