Following a recent update, the IV Therapy Passport elearning programme is now live and freely available to all registered health and social care professionals, as well as healthcare undergraduates across England.

The programme has been successfully running across London’s healthcare organisations since being launched by Capital Nurse in 2020 and was created to provide a standardised approach to intravenous medication administration, training and assessment across the capital. The NHS owned IV Therapy Passport has evolved into a multi-professional, multi-setting programme designed for healthcare professionals across nursing, medical, and allied health disciplines working in diverse environments.

The Passport is a comprehensive training and assessment tool, offering a rich digital curriculum that combines theory and practical assessment components, both essential to achieving the digital IV Therapy Passport. Crucially, the Passport enables the workforce to transfer their digital IV competencies between organisations without the need to retrain.

All health and social care professionals are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new programme and review any areas of the passport that may not be up to date or are missing from their portfolio.

As part of the review process, subject matter experts and over 1800 recent users of the pathway were asked to share their feedback, which has proved to be invaluable in helping create a more accessible and upgraded version of the course that meets the evolving needs of the NHS workforce.

The course is split into two parts, a theory and a practical assessment and learners must do both to enable them to obtain their digital passport. The course is digital, flexible, and consists of bite-sized knowledge sessions and corresponding eAssessments. Each session takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and the eAssessment approximately 20 minutes, with the exception of the drug calculations eAssessment which may take longer.

The passport, and its associated elearning and eAssessment, is designed for registered and student health care professionals caring for infants, children, young people and adults, whose role requires the administration of intravenous medication for patients. Healthcare professionals can access the pathway and passport at a range of points in their career.
