About the Complications of excess weight (CEW) in children and young people programme

This is a foundation elearning course for multi professionals working with children and young people (CYP) living with obesity, and their families.

The purpose of the elearning programme is to:

  • support MDT clinicians to deliver evidence-based, quality care to CYP with severe obesity by developing their understanding of identifying and treating conditions related to excess weight
  • standardise training opportunities across the country and improve retention by making this a more attractive space to work in
  • facilitate knowledge transfer between MDT members.

Expected outcomes:

  • improved experiences and quality of care for CYP referred to CEW clinics
  • helps to achieve wider strategic objectives on improving treatment of obesity in CYP, set out by the NHS Long Term Plan
  • improved knowledge in MDTs of the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to obesity and how to deliver evidence-based quality care for CYP
  • improved experience of care for CYP living with complications related to excess weight.

The course consists of five modules which look at and explore:

  1. Introduction to identification of complications associated with excessive weight in children and young people (CYP)
  2. An introduction to understanding different levels of overweight in children and young people living with complications associated with excess weight
  3. Connection between severe obesity and mental health
  4. Interventions for Childhood Weight Management
  5. Prevalence of childhood obesity, influence of social factors including poverty and appropriate safeguarding

At the completion of these modules participants will have gained a foundation level understanding of the importance of identification of childhood obesity, correct methods for taking measurements, the complications of living with overweight and obesity in childhood, prevalence data for the UK, the evidence base for interventions, and the importance of safeguarding.

Mini Mouth Care Matters Programme (Mini MCM)

DeMini Mouth Care Matters - badgental care is an almost entirely preventable condition, yet it is shockingly prevalent and remains the most common cause for hospital admissions for children in England. The principles of Mini MCM can be applied to CEW clinics to incorporate oral health care into the essential, holistic care of these CYP. This module aims to empower all members of the CEW team to take ownership of the oral health care of the CYP attending CEW clinics.
