About the Educator Training Resources programme

The Educator Training Resources (ETR) programme contains elearning sessions for clinical educators and supervisors across the healthcare professions. This multiprofessional resource is applicable to those who are teaching, supervising and assessing learners in practice.

More information

The elearning sessions cover a wide range of topics and are structured under the 6 courses below:

1. Supervision of Learners

This course covers topics including how to work with learners to facilitate their learning, assess their needs, set their learning objectives and provide feedback. There are also sessions covering the support provided to learners in relation to their wellbeing, personal development and career development.

2. Teaching Methods

This course covers different teaching and facilitation methods to employ in practice. It includes sessions around clinical skills teaching, small group teaching, using simulation and involving patients in teaching.

3. Assessment and Progression

This course covers approaches to assessment and the principles of assessment along with practical video sessions on using specific assessment tools. It contains both multiprofessional and profession-specific sessions.

4. The Learning Environment

This course covers topics such as how to make the clinical environment safe and conducive to effective learning, the quality assurance of learning environments and ensuring patient safety.

5. Approaches in Education

This course explores the different approaches and ideas you may adopt in clinical education, including interprofessional education and the use of elearning.

Included within this course are the guidance for teaching online for healthcare educators elearning sessions, which were developed to help all healthcare educators plan and deliver online teaching sessions and move between face-to-face and online teaching effectively.

  • Session 1 explores the opportunities, challenges and misconceptions associated with online learning. It offers guidance on the factors that need to be considered when planning your online teaching.
  • Session 2 explores the practical aspects of teaching online, explains how to select an online platform and describes how online tools can enrich the learning experience for educators and students.

Healthcare educators who are interested in the Guidance for Teaching Online for Healthcare Educators sessions may also be interested in these further elearning resources:

  • Supervision for Multi-professional Teams This resource aims to provide learners with information about the principles of supervision. It was developed for workplace supervisors as an alternative to single-day training.
  • Video Group Clinics This resource was developed to provide an overview and a working knowledge of virtual group clinics in general practice, including the benefits of online consultations, delivery principles and outcomes.

6. Training for the foundation supervisor

This course covers general principles for those supervising non-training grade doctors. The sessions support the professional development of educators and include video-based practical modules on topics such as supervision, feedback, workplace-based assessments, dealing with doctors in difficulty and Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP).
