About the Fundamentals of Health Protection programme

These sessions have been developed to introduce the foundation skills required for people working within health protection teams.

It will support health protection teams to protect individuals, groups and populations from infectious disease and non infectious public health threats including radiation, chemical and environmental hazards, and manage and minimise the risk of vulnerability to public health events.

The programme includes the following sessions:

1. Introduction to health protection

A summary of health protection and the roles and responsibilities of colleagues working in this field and an overview of the general principles and frameworks that can be applied to risk assessment and response for most infectious diseases and non-infectious environmental hazards.

2. The core principles of infectious disease transmission

Identifying the core principles of, and frameworks for, infectious disease transmission using the 3D’s of epidemiology – Determinants, Dynamics and Distribution – with a case study example.

3. Health protection case investigation & response

How to assess the risk of infectious diseases and apply targeted prevention and control measures.

4. Core principles of infectious disease outbreak management

The investigation and management of infectious disease outbreak using the core principles of infectious disease transmission.

Key audiences for this programme are new team members working in regional health protection teams including specialist registrars and health protection practitioners.

To access any elfh programme, you will need an elfh account. If you do not have one, then you can register by selecting the Register button below.

To view the Fundamentals of Health Protection programme, select the View button below. If you already have an account with elfh, you will also be able to login and enrol on the programme from the View button.

If you already have an account with elfh, then you can enrol on to the Fundamentals of Health Protection programme by logging in to the elfh Hub, selecting My Account > Enrolment and selecting the programme. You can then access the programme immediately in the My e-Learning section.
