New Learning Hub resources to support AHPs

Posted on: March 31st, 2023 by Vanessa Bassnett No Comments

A new catalogue of resources has launched on the Learning Hub to share knowledge, resources and helpful links as part of the National AHP Preceptorship and Foundation Support Programme.

This supports AHP’s of all professions and working across all sectors to access high quality preceptorship and foundation support as they transition into and between roles or employment and progress through their careers.

The Learning Hub catalogue is managed and overseen by the National AHP Preceptorship and Foundation Support Programme, but development is guided by emergent needs, and the wider AHP community of practice.

The site content will grow as resources are developed and gather contributions from individuals, teams, organisations, professional bodies. Ensuring this is representative of all healthcare sectors is essential – and so the team are welcoming resources to be shared with the national team to be uploaded.

If you have something to add, please connect with the team via our shared inbox ahp-preceptorship@hee.nhs.uk

To access the catalogue go to https://learninghub.nhs.uk.

Eating disorders elearning now updated

The Eating Disorders Training for Health and Care Staff programme has recently been reviewed and updated.

5 sessions, listed below, now reflect up to date clinical guidelines and include changes based on user feedback such as more questions to increase interactivity and test knowledge gained. They also reflect the most recent International Classification of Diseases ICD-11 diagnostic categories, to ensure the learning is in line with current criteria for different disorders.

The programme has been developed with HEE, the charity Beat and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. It aims to help healthcare professionals including medical students, foundation doctors, the nursing workforce and health visitors, feel confident in identifying and treating eating disorders in patients.

For more information and to access the updated sessions, plus many others, please visit the Eating Disorders Training for Health and Care Staff programme page.

End-of-Life Care sessions recently updated

Posted on: March 22nd, 2023 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the Association for Palliative Medicine to update 4 existing sessions within the public access End-of-Life Care (e-ELCA) elearning programme.

The updated sessions focus on communication and end-of-life care for LGBTQ people, as listed below:

  • Request for euthanasia
  • Initiating conversations about end-of-life care: dementia
  • Telephone communication
  • Inclusive palliative and end-of-life care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) people

Since October 2022, e-ELCA has been made public access so that everyone, regardless of their employment status, can access vital elearning resources on providing end-of-life care. We have now retired the previous public access end-of-life care for all programme, but all content can be found on the main e-ELCA programme page.

To access, learners need to register on the HEE elfh Hub. When registering you will be asked for information in the ‘About you’ section. If you are registering with a personal or with a non-NHS work email address, please select ‘None of the above option’. If you are a care worker or hospice worker and your employer hasn’t given you a registration code, please also select the ‘None of the above option’.

e-ELCA offers more than 175 sessions grouped into 9 modules including assessment, communication skills, symptom management and bereavement care.

The programme also contains learning paths which provide targeted learning for specific staff groups, defined curricula and condition-specific end-of-life care.

Please note, the programme covers sensitive topics including death, dying, the different stages of end-of-life and bereavement which may be distressing to some learners.
For more information and to access the programme, please visit the End-of-Life Care programme page.

Eating, Drinking and Swallowing elearning now available

Posted on: March 16th, 2023 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

A new elearning programme for speech and language therapy students is now available.

Pre-registration, Eating, Drinking, and Swallowing (EDS), explores the pre-assessment, assessment, management, and discharge of 2 adult and 2 paediatric patients with EDS difficulties.

On completion of the programme students should send a copy of their assessment results to their higher education institute as part record of achievement of the competencies.

The speech and language therapist has an important role in working with people with EDS needs. By 2026 all speech and language therapy students will graduate having achieved pre-registration EDS competencies.

This elearning was developed through a joint project between Health Education England and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

For more information and to access the programme, please visit the Pre-registration, Eating, Drinking, and Swallowing webpage.

New Prescribing Fluids in Adults course added to SCRIPT programme

Posted on: March 15th, 2023 by Louise Garrahan No Comments

Healthcare professionals involved in prescribing intravenous fluids can access free elearning within the SCRIPT programme to understand the key indications for intravenous fluids and the common types of intravenous fluids prescribed for adult hospital inpatients.

Fluids: Practical Prescribing in Adults provides information on clinical situations where intravenous fluids are required and offers practical advice about the most appropriate fluids in a variety of situations.

Users completing the course will achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • recall the indications for intravenous fluids
  • summarise a patient’s fluid and electrolyte requirements
  • recall the commonly available intravenous fluids
  • determine which intravenous fluids should be given in common clinical situations
  • select the appropriate combination of fluids to meet the needs of a variety of patients.

The course gives an oversight of the three indications for intravenous fluids: maintenance, resuscitation, and replacement. It also discusses how, in many clinical scenarios, more than one type of fluid is required to meet the needs of the patient and how to monitor the patient appropriately.

For more information and to access the course, please visit the SCRIPT programme page.

Menopause awareness training to support the NHS workforce

Posted on: March 8th, 2023 by Nicola Kipling No Comments

The NHS workforce is over 1.3 million strong, and 76.5% of the workforce (over 1 million) are women. Women between the ages of 45 and 54 who are likely to be going through the menopause transition make up 1 in 5 of the entire NHS workforce, over 260,000 women.

The Menopause Awareness elearning programme has been developed with NHS England to help colleagues provide a supportive working environment that champions the wellbeing of women and others affected by the menopause transition, so they thrive in the workplace.

This elearning is designed for all colleagues in the workforce. Whether you are a person transitioning through the menopause, or if you are looking for information to help you support a colleague.

The Menopause Awareness elearning session will give learners:

  • an overview of the menopause
  • the common symptoms associated with the menopause
  • scenarios which will help our people better understand the ways in which they can help support themselves and each other

For more information about the programme and to access the training today, please visit the Menopause Awareness programme page.
