NHS England has launched a groundbreaking Return to Practice Nursing Innovation Partnership, introducing the first approved blended learning course for nurses returning to practice after career breaks.
Developed through collaboration between NHS England and the Universities of Plymouth, Sheffield Hallam, and Coventry, the programme combines digital learning with simulation and immersive technologies including virtual reality headsets and online platforms.
The innovative curriculum has received approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council, who praised the “hard work and collaboration” and recognised it as “true partnership working.”
Following successful summer trials at Plymouth University, where students valued the community learning approach and digital resources, the first cohort launches in October 2025. Sheffield Hallam University follows in January 2026, with additional cohorts at Plymouth in February 2026 and Coventry University in September 2026.
The programme addresses the critical need to support qualified nurses returning to practice, utilising cutting-edge educational technology to enhance learning outcomes.
