Identifying and Responding to Sexual Assault and Abuse e-learning programme launched

Posted on: May 17th, 2021 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement to develop an elearning programme that provides information and advice for identifying and responding to sexual assault and abuse.
A sexual assault is any sexual act that a person did not consent to or is forced into against their will. It is a form of sexual violence and includes rape, child sexual abuse and exploitation, or other sexual offences. While sexual assault is not uncommon, many who experience abuse do not tell anyone. Sexual assault can have long lasting physical and emotional effects and early intervention and support is recommended.
The learning resources are aimed at health and care professionals who may be involved in the care of people who have experienced rape, sexual assault and/or abuse.
This programme brings together numerous resources relating to the identification and response to rape, sexual assault and abuse. The programme aims to:

* Increase awareness of all forms of sexual assault (rape, sexual abuse and exploitation) and who is affected by it
* Support health and care professionals to:
* spot the signs of abuse
* understand key aspects of safeguarding relevant to sexual assault in children, adolescents and vulnerable groups
* provide non-judgemental and supportive responses to disclosures of abuse
* Raise awareness of Sexual Assault Referral Centres, which offer forensic, medical, emotional and practical care and advice, as a key service following assault, regardless of whether or not an individual chooses to report the matter to the police.

Learners can access information, view videos and case studies and undertake self-assessments to support learning.
For more information about the free elearning programme, including details on how to access, please visit the Identifying and Responding to Sexual Assault and Abuse programme page.

e-Learning programme providing an overview of a career in orthoptics

Posted on: April 20th, 2021 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the British and Irish Orthoptic Society to develop an elearning programme that offers an accessible insight into the career in orthoptics.

The learning resource is an alternative to face to face career experiences to enable the learner to gain an understanding of what a career in orthoptics includes and the skills and knowledge required.
The aim of the programme is to bridge the knowledge gap between the rational and emotional benefits of orthoptics and what students can expect to study at university. The interactive content demonstrates the complexity of the course to appeal to those with a strong science background, who may be considering a medical career.
The elearning modules explore 4 specific areas that underpin an orthoptist’s knowledge base to practice as an autonomous clinician:

* Vision function and how this is closely associated to brain development
* Binocular vision
* Eye muscle control and strabismus
* The cranial nerves – and how disease can present as eye symptoms

The programme is aimed at students to demonstrate how science subjects relate to ‘real life’ jobs. Students may wish to access the learning with other career influencers such as career advisors, family and friends. The programme also lends itself as a recruitment tool for mature students, career changers and ex-armed forces and complements other work streams created by the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines (SIHED) project and Health Education England.

For more information about the elearning programme, including details on how to access, visit the Orthoptics Careers Overview programme page.

COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna e-learning now available

Posted on: April 8th, 2021 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare has worked in partnership with Public Health England and NHS England and NHS Improvement to develop the COVID-19 Vaccination elearning programme.  The elearning programme is designed to provide the health and care workforce involved in the national COVID-19 vaccination programme with the knowledge they need to confidently promote high uptake of the vaccine and deliver the vaccine programme effectively.

The COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna is now available. Currently the national vaccination programme is only deploying this this vaccine to a limited group of vaccination centres. Staff who are rostered to work at these sites are asked to complete the core knowledge session as this is designed to provide essential knowledge about COVID-19 and the key principles of immunisation needed to deliver the vaccine.  Learners should then complete the vaccine-specific elearning session and assessment in advance. Staff working in PCN sites and Hospital Hub settings are not required to complete the training at this time but may want to access it at a future date. In addition, further information about the vaccine characteristics can be viewed via Chapter14a in the Green Book and the Summary of Product Characteristics for COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna (SmPC).

The vaccination elearning programme also consists of the COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 Pfizer-BioNTech session, the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca session and accompanying assessment sessions for each.

The elearning sessions describe the national COVID-19 vaccination programme for England. Most of the information in the sessions will be relevant for those involved in the programme throughout the UK and Crown Dependencies. However, those undertaking the programme in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Crown Dependencies should be aware that some details as to how the programme will be delivered may be different. Vaccinators should therefore ensure that they refer to any country-specific information available, so they are familiar with the details of the programme for the country they are practising in.

This elearning programme provides theoretical training.  Practical training in vaccine administration, and assessment and sign-off competency is also required before administering the COVID-19 vaccine.

For more information about the COVID-19 Vaccination programme, including details on how to access, visit the elfh website.

Promoting Careers in the Allied Health Professions e-learning programme now live

Posted on: March 24th, 2021 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the Office for Students, College of Podiatry, British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists, Society of Radiographers and British and Irish Orthoptics Society to develop three elearning sessions to support AHPs undertaking voluntary outreach work with young people and career changers, in schools or other settings.

The sessions, which should be completed in numerical order, teach learners about the context for outreach work and its importance, developing content that is relevant to different audiences, and delivering compelling content that will help to inspire the next generation of AHPs.

The resources capture the expertise in AHP outreach developed by the professional outreach team employed under the ‘Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines’ project, funded by the Office for Students (2018-21), and link closely with the ‘I See The Difference’ campaign and website.

Learning outcomes from the sessions may be submitted to the Health and Care Professions Council as part of a CPD audit.

For more information about the elearning programme, including details on how to access, please visit the Promoting Careers in the Allied Health Professions programme page.

e-Learning for Healthcare – What’s next?

Posted on: March 15th, 2021 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

HEE’s TEL team provides a range of services that enable the application of learning technologies and simulation-based education within HEE and across the health and care workforce to support education and training to improve patient care.

The TEL team’s services include managing three digital platforms that provide learning opportunities for the health and care workforce. The largest of these platforms is the elearning for healthcare (elfh) Hub.

In 2020, the elfh Hub saw 22 million session launches and it has seen over 50 million session launches since elfh began. The number of people accessing elfh content is increasing every day and the TEL team is keen to ensure stability for learners in the future.

In May 2020, the TEL team launched the Learning Hub; a new digital platform that provides easy access to a wide range of education and training resources for the health and care workforce. Organisations and users can contribute and share resources for those in health and care to access.

As part of the further development of the Learning Hub, existing elfh content will be migrated to the Learning Hub.  As well as the learning content being migrated, users’ accounts will also be transferred to ensure learning records are preserved to provide continuity for learners and employers.  It is important to highlight that all the existing functionality that users experience on the elfh Hub will be retained and, in fact, accessing elfh content via the Learning Hub will provide additional features and functionality for learners. The migration of elfh content to the Learning Hub supports the ways of working and the future direction of the TEL team’s work; keeping platforms up to date using the latest technology and providing easy access to many other resources and resource types to further support education and training for the health and care workforce.

The elfh design and development service will continue to operate as it currently does, working with subject matter experts, clinical leads and stakeholders to develop high quality digital learning content to meet the needs of our health and care learners.

We will share further updates when possible in our monthly newsletter, TEL News, and on Twitter – @HEE_TEL.  If you have any questions about the migration or would like adding to the distribution list for TEL News, please email tel@hee.nhs.uk.
