New course - Perinatal Mental Health Birth Trauma

Posted on: April 3rd, 2025 by Talisa Saini No Comments

Supporting patients who have experienced had a traumatic experience during birth is the aim of new elearning on Perinatal Mental Health Birth Trauma.

Three new learning modules build on a trauma informed approach to further explore birth trauma specifically and have been added to the Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) programme on the elearning for healthcare (elfh) hub. They are suitable for all professionals involved in perinatal care.

Studies indicate that as many as one in three birthing people found some aspect of the birth of their baby psychologically traumatic. Women with birth trauma often find it hard to bond with their baby and those with PTSD can be extremely anxious and irritable, leading to relationship difficulties. Many women who have had a traumatic birth suffer from painful and distressing physical symptoms, sometimes because of tearing or other physical injury.

The new sessions are:

  • Introduction and definition of birth trauma – explores what birth trauma is and identifies some of the risks that can make people more vulnerable to experiencing it.
  • Symptoms of birth trauma and postnatal PTSD – identifies birth trauma, in the context of families and relationships, and start to find possible support.
  • Different assessment tools available to screen for birth trauma – describes evidence-based tools and scales that screen for trauma and supportive options for psychological interventions.

National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA) elearning

Posted on: March 6th, 2025 by Talisa Saini No Comments

The National Breast Imaging Academy, and NHSE TEL elearning for healthcare collaborate to offer easy to access elearning to support workforce issues threatening the delivery of breast imaging services across the country.

Rolling out over 2025, four new elearning sessions will be available on a range of topics. The first being breast care for transgender and gender-diverse people.

This new elearning session is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a safe and affirming environment for transgender and gender-diverse people. Within the session, participants learn about the importance of understanding gender identity and gender affirmation, navigating NHS gender-affirmation pathways, and the specifics of gender-affirming surgery such as mastectomy and feminising top surgery.

Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in dismantling barriers that prevent transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals from accessing necessary medical care. Studies have shown that the TGD population experiences worse healthcare outcomes, including lower cancer survival rates, due to anticipated and experienced discrimination.

By educating healthcare professionals on the specific needs of transgender and gender-diverse people, the session aims to improve health outcomes and ensure that all individuals receive the high-quality care they deserve.
