Management of Burns for Paramedics – free elearning for emergency care workers

As we head into fireworks season, emergency care workers may attend an increased number of burn injuries. Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and the College of Paramedics have developed a Management of Burns for Paramedics elearning module which covers key topics in dealing with burns outside of hospitals.  The learning is suitable for all grades of emergency responder.

Written by a paramedic and edited by a burns specialist nurse, 4 interactive and bitesize elearning sessions are accessible on PCs, laptops, iPads and mobile phones. By completing the module, you will achieve a greater understanding of the pathophysiology, assessment and immediate management of burn injuries and contribute to your continuing professional development (CPD).

Free Paramedics elearning available to all students, newly qualified and registered paramedics

Health Education England and the College of Paramedics have worked in partnership to develop a dedicated elearning programme for Paramedics. Whether starting or returning to university studying Paramedic Science, starting work as a paramedic for the first time, or an experienced paramedic looking to refresh and update their knowledge, these sessions aim to support individuals applying theory into practice.

Gary Strong, National CPD Lead, College of Paramedics commented, ‘Quick and easy to access and produced by paramedics for paramedics, these sessions are invaluable for refreshing knowledge and applying learning in practice. They can be used by students to support their studies, newly qualified paramedics to reinforce their learning, or experienced paramedics for revision, and all who work alongside paramedics to develop applied clinical knowledge’.

The programme now includes 13 modules, with sessions written by paramedics and subject matter experts on a wide range of topics.

Urgent Care for Paramedics – Injuries elearning available

Health Education England and the College of Paramedics worked in partnership to develop an Urgent Care for Paramedics – Injuries module, as part of the Paramedics elearning programme. The module includes 10 elearning sessions to support paramedics in dealing with a range of injuries.

Elearning sessions include, but are not limited to:

  • Ankle Injuries: aims to provide the underlying theory and assessment techniques to carry out these assessments effectively
  • Knee Injuries: aims to give the pre-hospital clinician a greater understanding of knee injuries and red flags which may indicate a serious injury requiring further assessment and treatment
  • Elbow Injuries: aims to provide the underlying theory and techniques to carry out these assessments effectively
  • Minor Head Injury: aims to develop a foundational underpinning knowledge surrounding history taking, physical assessment and management of patients presenting with minor head injuries in the out-of-hospital environment
  • Minor Neck Injury: This session is designed to equip paramedics with the knowledge and theory to safely manage minor neck trauma at the scene of a minor road traffic accident (RTC). There will also be an emphasis on good safety netting if the patient is safe to discharge

Each interactive session can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Paramedics are supported by a clinical decision making elearning resource

Health Education England worked in partnership with the College of Paramedics to develop a Clinical Decision Making for Paramedics module. The module helps paramedics to consider how they make decisions in different circumstances and discusses different theories associated with clinical decision making.

Sessions include:

  • Introduction to Clinical Decision Making
  • Metacognition
  • Novice to Expert
  • Dual Process Theory
  • Heuristics and Bias
  • Pattern Recognition
  • Hypothetico-Deductive Decision Making
  • Importance of Red Flags

New elearning sessions available in the Long Term Conditions for Paramedics module

Health Education England worked in partnership with the College of Paramedics to develop 2 new sessions in the Long Term Conditions for Paramedics module. The module has been developed to support paramedics knowledge and skills in treating and managing long term conditions.

The new sessions are Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Heart Failure.

Existing sessions include, but are not limited to

  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart Failure
  • Living with Stroke
  • Why Falls and Frailty Matter

Urgent care for paramedics – Illness

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked with the College of Paramedics to produce 10 modules on urgent care for paramedics – illness.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, paramedics and others may find the modules useful when providing urgent care in a range of different settings. The sessions may be useful for experienced paramedics, students or assistant practitioners, and healthcare professionals working in primary, urgent and unscheduled care.

The urgent care for paramedics – illness modules include:

  • acute red eye
  • adult rashes
  • back pain
  • cellulitis
  • community acquired pneumonia
  • constipation
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • sore throat
  • urinary tract infection

Within each module, interactive sessions can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and last approximately 20 minutes.

Paediatric modules for paramedics

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked with the College of Paramedics to produce nine modules on paediatric care for paramedics.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, paramedics may find the modules useful when caring for children in different scenarios, whether they are experienced paramedics, students or assistant practitioners.

The paediatrics for paramedics’ modules includes:

  • Introduction to paediatrics for paramedics
  • Applying safeguarding in practice
  • Childhood rashes
  • Diabetes in children
  • Poisons and toxidrome
  • The child with fever
  • The limping child
  • The child with respiratory distress
  • The vomiting child

Within each module, interactive sessions can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and last approximately 20 minutes.

COVID-19 e-learning module available for paramedics

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and the College of Paramedics developed an elearning module which provides educational support for paramedics and emergency responders.

Supporting Paramedic Practice During COVID-19 is available within the paramedics elearning programme and includes interactive learning experiences that are accessible on mobile devices.

Supporting paramedic practice during COVID-19

Written by experienced paramedic elearning authors for the College of Paramedics, the module includes 5 sessions of varied lengths which learners can select individually, or complete as a whole module.

The sessions include:

  • the assessment and management of COVID-19 patients for paramedics
  • paramedic wellbeing during a pandemic
  • mechanical ventilators used in prehospital care
  • paramedic use of PPE
  • COVID-19 additional guidance for paramedics

By completing the module, you will achieve a greater understanding of virus transmission, assessment and management of COVID-19 patients and contribute to your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Learners have found the COVID-19 module to be “a very good source of information”, “all very relevant and interesting” and commented that the elearning is “very clear and easy to understand” and they “will recommend it to colleagues”.

e-Learning sessions support paramedics caring for mother and baby

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked with the College of Paramedics to develop ten bite-sized sessions to develop paramedics’ knowledge of childbirth, maternal emergencies and care of newborn babies.

Written and edited by paramedic-midwife, Aimee Yarrington, each session in the maternity and newborn care for paramedics’ module was designed to build confidence and competence in experienced paramedics, students and assistant practitioners when caring for mother and baby in a wide range of scenarios such as normal birth, breech birth, peripartum haemorrhage and newborn life support.

The module covers the following topics:

  • Ante-partum haemorrhage
  • Birth
  • Breech birth
  • Care of the newborn
  • Cord prolapse
  • Maternal resuscitation
  • Newborn life support
  • Post-partum haemorrhage
  • Pregnancy induced hypertension and pre-eclampsia
  • Shoulder dystocia

Each interactive session can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and lasts approximately 20 minutes.
