Updated IV Therapy Passport elearning now live

Posted on: November 25th, 2025 by Charlotte Murray No Comments

Following a recent update, the IV Therapy Passport elearning programme is now live and freely available to all registered health and social care professionals, as well as healthcare undergraduates across England.

The programme has been successfully running across London’s healthcare organisations since being launched by Capital Nurse in 2020 and was created to provide a standardised approach to intravenous medication administration, training and assessment across the capital. The NHS owned IV Therapy Passport has evolved into a multi-professional, multi-setting programme designed for healthcare professionals across nursing, medical, and allied health disciplines working in diverse environments.

The Passport is a comprehensive training and assessment tool, offering a rich digital curriculum that combines theory and practical assessment components, both essential to achieving the digital IV Therapy Passport. Crucially, the Passport enables the workforce to transfer their digital IV competencies between organisations without the need to retrain.

All health and social care professionals are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new programme and review any areas of the passport that may not be up to date or are missing from their portfolio.

As part of the review process, subject matter experts and over 1800 recent users of the pathway were asked to share their feedback, which has proved to be invaluable in helping create a more accessible and upgraded version of the course that meets the evolving needs of the NHS workforce.

The course is split into two parts, a theory and a practical assessment and learners must do both to enable them to obtain their digital passport. The course is digital, flexible, and consists of bite-sized knowledge sessions and corresponding eAssessments. Each session takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and the eAssessment approximately 20 minutes, with the exception of the drug calculations eAssessment which may take longer.

The passport, and its associated elearning and eAssessment, is designed for registered and student health care professionals caring for infants, children, young people and adults, whose role requires the administration of intravenous medication for patients. Healthcare professionals can access the pathway and passport at a range of points in their career.

Four Nations Responsible AI in Healthcare Education Conference: Key insights and future directions

Posted on: November 21st, 2025 by Naomi Brennan No Comments

The Four Nations Conference brought together 1,469 participants from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for a day of deep exploration into the future of AI in healthcare education. Across 14 sessions (including keynotes, case studies and panels) attendees engaged with national leaders, educators, innovators and practitioners, sharing practical experiences and strategic visions.

Key Themes

AI Literacy and Upskilling
A strong emphasis was placed on building foundational AI knowledge for all healthcare staff. Wales’ Foundations in AI module and Microsoft’s M365 Copilot training were highlighted as scalable models for upskilling. Speakers stressed the need for tailored, role-specific learning and support for those less confident with emerging technologies.

Responsible and Ethical AI
Sessions repeatedly addressed ethical challenges such as data privacy, bias, transparency and governance. The SAFE framework (Source, Algorithm, Fit, Ethics) emerged as a practical tool for evaluating AI solutions, alongside calls for critical thinking and human oversight.

Practical Applications
Case studies showcased AI-powered simulation for communication skills, language and dialect diversity, and AR/VR for suicide prevention training. Tools like Microsoft Copilot and the VITAL platform demonstrated how AI can streamline administrative tasks, enhance learning and create realistic, emotionally relevant training environments.

Assessment and Academic Integrity
The impact of AI on assessment was a recurring concern, with discussions on academic integrity, automation bias and redesigning assessments to prioritise clinical reasoning and authentic, in-person evaluation. AI’s potential to support international medical graduates and standardise feedback was also explored.

Collaboration and Diversity
The conference celebrated cross-nation collaboration, with each country sharing unique approaches and resources. There was a clear call to increase gender and ethnic diversity in AI development and ensure tools reflect the full spectrum of patient and workforce needs.

Concerns and Insights
The conference highlighted several significant concerns and insights regarding the integration of AI in healthcare education. Delegates expressed apprehension about the potential for AI to reinforce existing biases and widen health inequalities if not managed appropriately, emphasising the importance of using diverse datasets and ensuring algorithmic transparency. Additionally, there were warnings about the danger of over-reliance on AI, which could undermine critical thinking skills among both educators and clinicians. Environmental considerations were also brought to the fore, with participants noting the substantial ecological footprint of large-scale AI implementation and calling for future strategies to prioritise sustainability. Above all, the enduring value of authentic human connection in both education and patient care was a recurring theme, with consensus that AI should serve to augment, rather than replace, human judgement and empathy.

Looking Ahead
Recordings of all sessions will be released soon, with updates sent to registrants and details posted on the conference site. Attendees are encouraged to continue sharing insights and best practices. The day closed with a commitment to ongoing collaboration and supporting the responsible, inclusive adoption of AI in healthcare education across the UK.

Professional Development Framework for Interprofessional Simulation in Health and Care

Posted on: November 20th, 2025 by Charlotte Murray No Comments

The Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH) has launched a Professional Development Framework to support development of interprofessional simulation skills in health and care.

Developed in collaboration with stakeholders from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and ASPiH, the framework offers a shared and inclusive structure for individuals, organisations and systems to build confidence and expertise in simulation, whatever stage they’re at.

It builds on the well-established ASPiH Standards for Simulation-Based Practice and is designed to align with national priorities, including NHS England’s 10 Year Health Plan.

The framework reflects months of engagement with educators, clinicians, simulation technicians, programme leads, academics and national bodies. It sets out a collective ambition to strengthen the simulation workforce and improve the quality, safety and sustainability of simulation practice.

There are five domains of Simulation Practice, which are delivered across three levels; Discovery, Growth and Maturity:

  • Educational
  • Transformative
  • Technology
  • Scholarship
  • Leadership

The Simulation and Immersive Technologies team have contributed to this work and are proud to be listed as co-authors.

To find out more about the framework, please visit: Professional Development Framework – ASPiH

In advance of its official launch at the end of 2026, ASPiH and its partners, including NHS England, are undertaking some stakeholder engagement to gauge responses and invite feedback, including launch sessions at the ASPiH 2025 conference in Bournemouth, piloting the framework across the system and sharing case studies and best practice.

A feedback survey is open until the end of 2025 and we would love to hear your thoughts on this first phase.
