Effective team working: Foundation update (May 2024)

Posted on: May 20th, 2024 by Vanessa Bassnett

Welcome to your May 2024 update from the Foundation elearning programme.

Throughout your career you will work in a team and sometimes that teamwork will cross traditional boundaries. It’s worth taking time to consider effective ways of working with other teams across secondary and primary care. The sessions highlighted in this month’s update cover the basics of cross boundary working:

The sessions cover key areas in your curriculum on:

FPC 2: Clinical Prioritisation

FPC 3: Holistic Planning

FPC 4: Communication and Care

FPC5: Continuity of Care

FPC6: Sharing the Vision

Notes:

The Foundation elearning programme has been developed specifically for Foundation doctors by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in partnership with NHS England elearning for healthcare (NHSE elfh), and is approved by the UK Foundation Programme (UKFPO).

The online training has a range of other sessions that might help you. Please log in to the programme page to view more.

You can sign on to the elearning with your login supplied by elearning for healthcare at any time during your foundation training.

HORUS and TURAS have deep links to elearning for healthcare sessions from the Foundation Curriculum and are therefore accessible to all trainees, making it quicker and easier to access the appropriate session linked to the curriculum.

Final modules of Becoming Simulation Faculty launched

Posted on: May 8th, 2024 by Vanessa Bassnett No Comments

NHS England’s Technology Enhanced Learning team has launched the final elearning modules of Becoming Simulation Faculty (BSF), a national blended learning programme to support the professional development of simulation educators, practitioners, technicians, and managers in health and care.

BSF is a national approach to simulation faculty development, enhancing professional capabilities and supporting continual professional development of multi-disciplinary teams. It has been co-designed and authored in collaboration with experts across the UK simulation community.

The programme enables delivery of key targets in the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan by supporting educators to increase their impact, confidence and capabilities when designing, developing and delivering modern methods in simulation. This includes using immersive learning technologies and blended learning approaches which are critical to underpin growth in education capacity and ensuring equitable access to learning and enhancing simulation and immersive learning practices at scale.

It also aligns with the Educator Workforce Strategy, and the National Safety Syllabus, supporting hybrid education and workforce development, and high-quality, safe care delivery.

The programme is running a core course (6 theory-based online elearning topics and a face-to-face workshop) throughout 2024, and from 2025 will include advanced learning opportunities.

New type 2 diabetes elearning supports better treatment and outcomes for children and young people

Posted on: May 8th, 2024 by Vanessa Bassnett No Comments

A new elearning programme about managing type 2 diabetes in children and young people (CYP) has been developed for healthcare staff.

It aims to help increase awareness of how best to care for CYP with type 2 diabetes which should improve their longer-term health.

The resource features six sessions covering a range of topics including diagnosis, glucose monitoring, complications and pharmaceutical and psychological interventions.

It has been developed by elearning for healthcare, NHS England and the CYP Diabetes Network after data showed an increase in the number of CYP being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Despite this increase, type 2 diabetes is considered a relatively rare condition in paediatrics – in 2019/20, 58 per cent of paediatric diabetes units managed fewer than six children with type 2 diabetes – paediatric teams are often not familiar with the more progressive nature of early onset type 2 diabetes and the need for early intervention and aggressive treatment.

The training will therefore allow learners to refresh and further increase their skills in managing type 2 diabetes and help them to keep up to date with the latest treatments and guidance.

Each session takes about 30 minutes to complete and is primarily aimed at staff working in specialist children and young adult diabetes services. It would also be useful for doctors, consultants, nurses, dietitians, psychology staff and youth workers.

For more information and to access the sessions, please visit the Managing Type 2 Diabetes in Children and Young People programme page.

New sessions added to End-of-Life Care programme

The End-of-Life Care For All (e-ELCA) elearning programme now features new sessions on a cancer case study, palliative care for people with mental ill health, and financial support.

The cancer case study explores the common physical, psychosocial and spiritual symptoms that patients may experience and how these can be addressed.

Palliative care for people with mental ill health looks at the issues arising when providing palliative care for people with mental ill health. It focuses on broadening understanding of the specific needs of people with diagnosed mental illnesses who have incurable physical health conditions.

Advising on financial support from the welfare system outlines the financial support available for patients who are nearing the end of life and offers guidance for clinicians who submit medical evidence to support their patients’ claims for benefits.

More than 77,000 staff from across health and care actively use e-ELCA training sessions, which have been launched over 1.5million times. They cover a range of topics including symptom management, spiritual care, quality of life and bereavement care.

The new and existing sessions can be accessed through the End-of-Life Care For All programme page.

Eastman Dental Hospital Education Centre launches new elearning package

Posted on: December 12th, 2023 by Vanessa Bassnett No Comments

Eastman Dental Hospital Education Centre has launched a new package of elearning for UK NHS dental teams, offering a range of clinical and non-clinical content to upskill and inform clinical practice and support the Advancing Dental Care (ADC) agenda.

The training offers dentists, dental nurses, hygienists, and other dental professionals easy access to tailored, interactive learning based on the latest techniques and evidence. It is designed to elevate expertise and proficiency, build confidence in daily clinical practice and balance learning against the professional demands of a busy schedule.

The elearning has been created in partnership with NHS England’s Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team and the first phase of the programme is available on the elearning for healthcare (elfh) Hub. The first modules are:

Child focused dental practices (CFDP): A series of 11 webinars focussing on the treatment of children and young people with tips and guidance on tools and techniques that can be used in general dental practice.

General Dentistry e-learning: This series of 13 webinars provides guidance on the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with general oral diseases.  Each session provides up to date information on current thinking and management.

Future phases of the programme will include modules on Restorative Based e-learning, followed by the Core Learning Series for Dental Care Professionals (DCP).

NHS staff can register for the elfh Hub for free and the modules and webinars can be accessed online 24/7 so learning content is always accessible and can be completed when convenient. Each completed session provides certification of continued professional development.
