New Care Certificate scenario for staff involved in caring for patients with cancer

Posted on: November 21st, 2024 by Charlotte Murray No Comments

This new scenario is an opportunity for learners to apply the principles outlined in the Care Certificate Standards in a cancer care setting. Learners will be presented with a series of questions throughout the scenario which should be answered based on the Care Certificate knowledge-based sessions.

This session helps to improve the understanding of staff involved in caring for patients with cancer and has been developed by the NHS England TEL Team, (NHSE), the Workforce Team and the Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance.

The Workforce Team at Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance is dedicated to enhancing the cancer workforce through collaboration and education. Their mission is to implement transformational and innovative programs that align with the goals of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan.

The Care Certificate provides a framework to ensure that all support workers have the same introductory skills, knowledge and behaviours to provide compassionate, safe and high-quality care in their workplace settings.

Each new scenario uses patient case studies and examples from the working environment to help colleagues apply the Care Certificate Standards within their work setting. The scenarios cover key aspects including preparing for a shift, handover meetings, and examples of clients and factors of their care to consider. Learners then experience supporting the clients through a particular session and updating their care plan or patient notes afterwards.

Cancer Nursing Careers e-learning programme now live

Posted on: July 22nd, 2020 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare has worked with RM Partners – the West London Cancer Alliance, University of Stirling and the University of Huddersfield to develop an elearning programme to provide cancer-specific learning opportunities for registered nurses who provide care to people affected by cancer in non-specialist cancer settings including primary, secondary and community services.

All nurses, regardless of practice setting, are likely to have contact with people affected by cancer and, to enhance their practice, should have an understanding of cancer and its treatment, education in the basic principles and practice of cancer care, skills in assessing the cancer care needs of patients and families, and training in communication skills.
The eight elearning sessions align to the Royal College of Nursing’s Cancer Nursing Career and Education Framework eight outcomes and are:

* The context of cancer nursing
* Basic science and treatment of cancer
* Nursing assessment and interventions in the management of people affected by cancer
* Cancer as a chronic illness/supportive and palliative care
* Understanding impact of cancer on the individual, families and health care professionals
* Information and communication in cancer care
* Clinical leadership and resource management of cancer nursing
* Evidence-based and applied research in cancer care.

The cancer specific learning outcomes identified within the sessions aim to ensure induction, consolidation and on-going development of knowledge and skills in cancer care.
