Chief Executive updates

A long-term strategic framework for workforce planning by spring 2022

Earlier this year HEE was commissioned to convene work with leaders, influencers and advocates to co-design and shape a long-term strategic framework for workforce planning by spring 2022.
For the first time ever, this will span health and social care, and will also include regulated professionals working in social care, like social workers, nurses, and occupational therapists.
On 1 November, we were delighted to co-host our first Deliberative Event, to start the conversation with stakeholders. Over 200 senior leaders from across health and social care, as well as representatives from the third sector and those representing people who need and receive care, attended. ‘This is a crisis now and we need to act now’ Navina Evans pledges HEE’s commitment around a greener NHS in honour of COP26

COP26 is now taking place now in Glasgow until 12 November 2021, and any decisions made could lead to big changes to our everyday lives.
The Greener NHS programme is working with colleagues, hospitals, and our partners to build on the great work that’s been done so far on reducing the impact on public health, and the environment, while also saving money. Read more on the HEE website.

COVID Vaccination

Health Education England (HEE) is encouraging all health and care trainees, students and learners, to ensure they have had both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine unless they are medically exempt.

This follows the Government announcement that COVID-19 vaccination will be a condition of deployment for all frontline health and social care workers from 1 April 2022. The requirement will apply to all staff, trainees and volunteers who have direct face-to-face contact with people receiving care.

Professor Mark Radford, Chief Nurse, Health Education England is leading HEE’s drive to encourage trainee, learner and student vaccinations which will protect them, their families and the people they may be caring for and enable them to take part in their clinical learning placements.

Over the next few months, more information will be provided for trainees, students or learners who wish to opt not to have the vaccination without medical reasons and for those who are exempt and may require further information on how to continue with placements.

Multi-Disciplinary Updates

The National Education and Training Survey is now open

The National Education and Training Survey (NETS) is again live. The survey which runs twice a year is the only national survey open to all healthcare trainees and students to give important feedback on their clinical placements. Read more on the HEE website or fill out the survey here.

Launch of latest round of Digital Fellowship in Healthcare is open

Health professionals wanting to lead digital health transformations and innovations in their organisations can apply for the Topol Programme for Digital Fellowships in Healthcare, launched by HEE. For more information about the Topol Digital Fellowship and how to apply visit the HEE website.

Population Health Digital Toolkit launched today for learners

Health and care learners seeking insight and knowledge into population health can access a free resource, launched by Health Education England, to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
The Population Health Digital Toolkit provides links to free resources to help learners better understand population health principles, which can contribute to improved health outcomes across health and social care. These resources have been mapped to 11 core curriculum areas and will enable learners to acquire population health competencies in areas such as population health data, health inequalities, population health approaches and behaviour change. Population Health Fellowship

The selection process for organisations who would like to host a Population Health Fellow is now open for cohort 3 commencing in September 2022. Applications are open until 30 November 2021. More information and contacts are on the HEE website

Pharmacy

Pharmacy Integration Programme

The Pharmacy Integration Programme is investing a further £15.9 million in pharmacy professional career development. This will allow for the expansion of frontline pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in primary and community care, to meet the needs of patients and local communities. Find out more on our website.

Trainee pharmacist foundation year: e-portfolio registration closes 12 December

A record 85% of trainee foundation pharmacists are already set up on the new e-portfolio system. This tool is directly supporting practice-based assessment against the 2021/22 interim learning outcomes set by the General Pharmaceutical Council Standards.

Please ask your trainee foundation pharmacist to complete the HEE survey now to register before the deadline of 12 December 2021.

Mental health

New data shows growth in children and young people’s mental health services workforce across England

The mental health workforce supporting children and young people in England has seen a 39% increase in whole time equivalent (WTE) staff since 2018, according to new data¹ published by Health Education England on our website.

Award for HEE supported children and young people’s mental health crisis resources

The ‘We Can Talk: Fundamentals of Compassionate Care’ online learning resource, which was commissioned and supported by HEE’s national mental health team, has won a Nursing Times Award in the Emergency and Critical Care category.

Filmed during last year’s lockdown, the online resources were developed and curated with the voices and experiences of young people. By understanding the needs and experiences of young people using this resource, health and care professionals will have improved knowledge and confidence when supporting young people in a mental health crisis.

New Guide to Practice-Based Learning for Allied Health Professional (AHP) Students in Research

This guide shows the possibilities and benefits of offering practice-based learning in research for Allied Health Professional (AHP) students. The ideas and examples show how practice-based learning in research can enable students to achieve their learning outcomes and enhance their professional skills and employability.

Are you effectively mobilising your knowledge?

Enabling the health and care workforce to access and use high-quality evidence and knowledge is fundamental to the delivery of high-quality care.

Each November (#KNOWvember21) NHS knowledge and library specialists take the opportunity to showcase the many ways in which they mobilise evidence and knowledge. During the month the emphasis is on encouraging more people in the NHS to apply and use evidence, build know-how, continue to learn and drive innovation to transform services and improve the quality of healthcare services and healthcare outcomes.

It is also an opportunity for all those in health and care to share and learn from each other. NHS knowledge and library teams are in place to provide individuals, teams and organisations with evidence and knowledge to meet their needs as well as converting this into evidence and knowledge that is easily accessible and digestible to make a real difference to informing healthcare decisions.

BMJ Best Practice – patient leaflets now app-based

You can now download the BMJ Best Practice app for unlimited access to clinical answers anytime, anywhere. FREE to the NHS in England courtesy of Health Education England: www.bmj.com/hee 

BMJ Best Practice has more than 500 patient leaflets that cover over 300 conditions. There is a vast range of information produced to directly support staff to explain a condition or treatment to their patients, covering areas such as cancer screening, hip and knee replacement surgery, HIV, COVID-19 vaccines, contraception methods, anaphylaxis and WHO recommended childhood vaccines.

Benefits of Volunteering Report Released

Health Education England, in partnership with the University of Portsmouth has launched the ‘NHS Employee Volunteers: Implications for Learning, Work and Careers’ qualitative project report.
To compile the report we spoke with volunteers about their experiences of volunteering within the NHS as well as in the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector.
The report concludes that the benefits of employer supported volunteering programmes are wide-ranging to the individual, the employer and organisation the volunteer supports. To read the full report click here.

ICS Feedback questionnaire

Following the launch of the second iteration of the Integrated Care System (ICS) statements we are contacting all ICS stakeholders to seek views about the statements, both their content and presentation.
Your feedback will help us to improve the product and consider other qualitative and quantitative measures that we will look to introduce over time.
HEE will now regularly be publishing a Statement for each ICS/STP in England as part of our commitment to being transparent about the investment which we make in the current and future workforce of the NHS. It covers funding for future workforce and for workforce development, which is about 90% of HEE’s total investment.

HEE Operating Model

Our new Operating Model and Integrated Care System Relationship Guidance are available to view on the HEE website. Our Operating Model has been developed in light of the changes set out in the Health and Care Bill, in particular Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) becoming statutory organisations.

It will help ensure effective collaborative working with ICSs through the relationship between our national and regional teams.

Our key objective has been to unify and integrate service and training recovery
This month, we published an interim review into the ambitious programme of work that HEE and our partners are collaborating on – the medical training recovery programme. There is still so much to be done, but it has been important to pause and evaluate our progress, note our successes and consider the remaining challenges, as we take the next steps in managing the continued progression of England’s 55,000 doctors in training, and support the management of the significant NHS care backlog post-pandemic. HEE launches new medical degree pilot as part of Blended Learning programme

Prospective medical students in England will soon be able to choose to study flexibly thanks to a new pilot scheme launched by HEE and delivered by Queen Mary University of London.

The new programme aims to give students wanting to complete a medical degree more flexibility over how they study and a greater choice of where the University can provide practice learning opportunities to complete their training.

Nursing and Midwifery

Nurses and midwives offered increased incentive to return to practice

Former nurses and midwives wishing to re-join the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register and return to practice will be offered £1,000 to help with studying and living expenses. All information required for all routes of Return to Practice are available on the Return to Practice Health Careers website.

Pharmacy

Trainee pharmacist foundation year

Roll-out of the e-portfolio continues. This new tool is directly supporting the use of the HEE Foundation Year Assessment Strategy, to support practice-based assessment against the 2021/22 interim learning outcomes set by the General Pharmaceutical Council Standards.

If your trainee has not yet registered, please ask them to complete the HEE survey now and before the deadline of 12 December 2021.  Access is now also being rolled out to designated supervisors and education programme directors. Undergraduate clinical placement models

We are working with Schools of Pharmacy in England to explore the introduction of cross-sector clinical placements as part of the MPharm degree. Find out more on our website.

HEE newly qualified pharmacist pathway

This new (optional) pathway aims to link the initial education and training reforms to a continuum of development into post-registration. It is designed for learners across all sectors of pharmacy, to help them meet their development needs as they enter newly qualified practice. Find out more on our website.

Mental health

New IAPT high-intensity psychotherapeutic counselling training pilot

An exciting new training pilot, launched by HEE, offers a three-year salaried and funded training pathway for 60 trainee psychotherapeutic counsellors to work in NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services to deliver specified IAPT services for adults with depression.

The IAPT High-Intensity Psychotherapeutic Counsellor training pilot will support the NHS to expand access to a range of quality, evidence-based psychological therapies, as part of a wider programme to offer these interventions to an additional 380,000 adults and older people with common mental health problems by 2023/24, as set out in the NHS Long Term Plan. Psychological professions week conference

Building on the success of last year, the Psychological Professions Network (PPN) is excited to announce the second national conference for Psychological Professions Week 2021. The free conference will run from 15-19 November 2021 and will feature sessions aligned to the National Vision of the Psychological Professions.

The PPN is a membership network for all psychological professionals and other stakeholders of NHS commissioned psychological healthcare. They inform, enable and influence NHS commissioned healthcare to maximise the benefits of the psychological professions for the public. Workforce and education initiatives

New patient safety training for all staff, now available

In partnership with NHS England and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, HEE has published new patient safety training materials. The training materials can be found on the elearning for healthcare hub. The training has five levels, which build on each other, the first two levels Essentials for patient safety and Access to practice are available now. The first level, Essentials for patient safety, is the starting point and all NHS staff, even those in non-patient facing roles are encouraged to complete it. Level two, Access to practice is intended for those who have an interest in understanding more about patient safety and those who want to go on to access the higher levels of training.

The training has been devised following the publication of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy which contains a patient safety syllabus. The syllabus sets out a new approach to patient safety emphasising a proactive approach to identifying risks to safe care while also including systems thinking and human factors, all of which has been incorporated into the training. Levels three to five of the training are expected to be available by the end of March 2022.

Global Learning Opportunities and Provision Surveys

HEE and Yorkshire and Humber Academic Health Science Network (YHAHSN) have teamed up to find out more about those who have undertaken an international element to their Health and Care work or course and those who would like to.

Please fill in the survey here.

We are also working with YHAHSN to gather information from all NHS secondary care provider organisations and higher education institutions to understand current attitudes toward and provision of global health activities for current and future NHS staff. We would be grateful if those responsible for global health activities in OD, business management or HR department could complete the survey here.

The deadline for both surveys has now been extended until 26 November 2021.

CLEAR week

CLEAR is a nationwide programme, supported by HEE, placing clinicians at the heart of healthcare decision making and innovation. #CLEARweek will be hosting sessions on a range of topics, from deep dives about the unique CLEAR methodology, data visualisation and analytics to Wardopoly, special guest speakers and networking events.

From 8 – 12 November 2021, the National CLEAR Programme will be hosting a week of events, guest speakers, workshops and interactive sessions around healthcare activity and workforce redesign. Learn about the use of AI and robotics in education and across health and care

We are running a series of webinars around the use of AI and robotics in education with the first, taking place on Thursday 18 November, 12:30 to 13:15, providing an introduction to the work of Health Education England’s Digital, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Technologies in Education (DART-Ed) programme. Ask our expert panel questions and learn more about the new AI capability framework, AI Roadmap, our work with NHSX and much more.

Health Innovation Placement (HIP) Pilot – call for expressions of interest

This new offering from our Digital Readiness Programme provides our clinical and non-clinical NHS leaders with an exciting opportunity to develop through exposure with start-ups and small-medium organisations (SMEs), with the aim of leading on the development of a technological solution to a specific NHS problem; support the understanding of digital development; so leading, improving and transforming the healthcare system by extracting the opportunity from digital.

New programme focuses on delivering value with digital technologies

The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), supported by HEE, is delivering a 12-month programme of work to increase awareness amongst NHS finance staff about digital healthcare technologies and their potential to transform services and drive value and efficiency. HEE urge NHS staff to take part in review of the Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF)

The first ever online survey asking NHS staff in England for their views on their statutory and mandatory training experience is now open. The Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) survey will help HEE to better understand users’ views, help shape training and how it may be delivered in future. It will also be used to inform future conversations regarding potential reforms to statutory and mandatory training.

Don’t miss the opportunity to let HEE know what you think works well, does the training meet your needs and what could be done better. To complete the survey, go to all staff survey. The survey closes on Friday 19 November 2021

Covid-19 Training Recovery Programme
This week Health Education England (HEE) has published an interim report which outlines the approach being taken, across the system, to define, manage and reduce the risks to the wellbeing, numbers, and future supply of the medical workforce.

The purpose of three phases – reset, recover and reform – respectively, has been to:

• minimise the initial impact of the pandemic on training and progression
• support trainees and educators with wellbeing and training recovery and
• lock in the innovations developed during the first two phases, to deliver long-term improvements in PGME and build future resilience into the medical education pipeline.

As well as outlining the approach being taken to manage the current position, the COVID-19 Training Recovery Programme Interim Report also sets out the joint commitments for continuing to build upon and embed the progress that has been made to facilitate training recovery and secure future improvements to PGME.

The pandemic has impacted every trainee differently which is seeing each region needing to approach the recovery in a different way based on their local need.  To demonstrate the different approaches a catalogue of case studies, that include local and regional initiatives to support training recovery and address the learning impact of COVID-19 on doctors in training, has been added to the Learning Hub.

New programme to boost critical care workforce launches

More Nurses and Allied Health Professionals will receive specialist training in critical care as a new blended learning package, aimed at strengthening the workforce in intensive care units, is rolled out across England.

Health Education England (HEE) secured £10m to deliver this specialist training which will support as many as 10,500 nursing staff to further their careers in critical care. It will be delivered as a blended learning course, offering more flexible access to participants so they are able to balance commitments such as having a family, being a carer or not being able to travel. New Global Learning Opportunities Website

NHS staff can now find out more about global learning opportunities on a new easy to use website.

The site which was launched on 5 October can be found here https://global-learning-opportunities.hee.nhs.uk/ and is a one stop shop for information about virtual and overseas learning opportunities, providing practical information on what staff can contribute and learn, how they can apply and case studies.

Global Learning Provision

Health Education England and Yorkshire and Humber Academic Health Science Network (YHAHSN) are working together to gather information from all NHS secondary care provider organisations and higher education institutions to understand current attitudes toward and provision of global health activities for current and future NHS staff.

A survey has been compiled which will be open until October 22nd and we would be grateful if those responsible for global health activities in OD, Business Management or HR department take the time to complete it. The survey can be found here: https://www.sircsurveys.com/f/41570156/1253/

A short course for a big health impact
Aimed at everyone working or studying in health and care, Health Education England has developed a free, 35minute, online health literacy course. Designed for people who work regularly with patients, families and carers. The course can help staff and students quickly learn easy-to-use techniques to improve communication. As a result, patients, families and carers will be able to make better health and wellbeing choices. You can read more about the course or access the course directly.

October is national Speak Up Month. Speaking up protects patient and is also the first step in organisations learning lessons to improve care and treatment.

National Education and Training Survey is now live
HEE’s 2021 National Education and Training Survey (NETS) is now live, giving students from across the country the chance to provide feedback on their clinical placement experience.

NETS collects opinions from students about their time in clinical placements to capture information on their learning experiences, what they thought worked well and what they think could be improved.  First piloted in 2018 and run twice a year, the survey is the only one of its type to cover multiple professions and the survey results provide vital feedback used to improve the quality of clinical placements across England.

Medical

Medical trainees join senior leaders to discuss tackling health inequalities

HEE learners and doctors in training were given the opportunity to put questions to Chief Medical Officer for England, Dr Chris Whitty, and Director of Education and Quality and Medical Director at HEE, Professor Wendy Reid, at the National Trainee Engagement Forum (NTEF) Insight Event on 9 June, 2021.

Nursing

Expansion of clinical placements gets £15m boost

We have pledged £15m to fund additional clinical placements across nursing, midwifery, allied health professionals (AHPs) and healthcare science, in 2021/22.

This funding will increase the number of placements offered to nursing, midwifery AHP, and healthcare students from September 2021, and will enable HEE to deliver the future health and care workforce in sufficient numbers and with the skills the NHS needs.

Education providers are anticipating a significant growth in student numbers this year across the healthcare professions. Applications in England have risen by 34% for nursing and 27% for AHPs and the expansion of clinical placements will enable providers to meet this demand.

Maternity

HEE adds new midwifery degree to blended learning programme

The introduction of a new blended learning degree in midwifery has moved a step closer as we announced four universities who will deliver the degree by March 2022.

The midwifery degree is the latest qualification to be included in HEE’s blended programme. It joins the nursing degree that was announced in July last year to help boost the nursing workforce and support the vision to open up the nursing profession to a much wider group of people. Students will emerge with a Bachelor’s degree in midwifery after 20 months to three years training depending on the chosen pathway.

Pharmacy

Community Pharmacy Workforce Survey (CPWS)

The deadline for the CPWS has been extended to Friday 25 June to ensure that we receive the maximum number of responses possible. This survey will help us to raise visibility of the community pharmacy workforce and help us to target education and training support to where it is most needed. Direct communications have been sent to pharmacy contractors to advise them of the extended deadline and encourage them to complete the survey. Pharmacy Technicians – 10-year anniversary as a registered profession
Registration for pharmacy technicians with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) became mandatory in July 2011. In October 2020 there were 20,372 pharmacy technicians in England on the GPhC register (Source GPhC).

Thursday, 1 July 2021 marks 10 years of pharmacy technicians becoming a registered profession. We are working with key stakeholders to raise awareness on social media using #pharmtechreg10 and supporting the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) with their virtual event.

The Trainee Pharmacist Foundation Year Programme

We are running joint webinars with NHS England and NHS Improvement and the General Pharmaceutical Council to explore how the Initial Education and Training reform programme will be implemented in the 2021/2022 Foundation Training Year (the new name for the pre-registration training year).

AHP student practice-based learning programme webinar

Earlier this week, the AHP student practice-based learning programme held a webinar to celebrate 12 months of innovation and launched a new animation. The animation outlines what practice-based learning is and what are the benefits to student Allied Health Professional students? It describes how Health Education England is working across the sector to support and build practice-based learning opportunities to enhance student learning.

The webinar shared gold standard innovation in TECS, simulation, non-clinical examples of practice-based learning. It was held as a celebration and to say thank you to everyone for their willingness to adapt quickly to a changing world and embrace the opportunity to lead the way with innovative projects. New NHS training aims to address loneliness and social isolation

Staff across the NHS, care and voluntary sectors will have access to a range of interventions and information about how to refer or signpost people who may be at risk of loneliness and social isolation.

A new elearning resource has been developed in collaboration with Public Health England and the Campaign to End Loneliness. It provides information to help health and care learners to recognise people who may be at risk from loneliness and social isolation and understand the potential negative outcomes this may have on their health.

A week to champion genomics in healthcare

Join HEE’s Genomics Education Programme (GEP) on Monday 28th June 2021 as they launch their #GenomicsConversation week of action campaign. Aimed at the nursing, midwifery and health visiting community, the week is an opportunity for the programme to demonstrate how relevant genomics is in practice today.

Free online activities will be available throughout the week, tailored to reflect each day’s theme. This year the GEP are pleased to launch several new podcast interviews, related resources and blogs that will be published as part of our range of curated content. In partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement the GEP is also co-hosting the first of three educational webinars. Partnership offers free e-leaning resource for UK NHS organisations

HEE has boosted its elearning portfolio for the health and care workforce, by partnering with FutureLearn.com to provide short courses to the NHS for free.

The partnership means fees are waived for all NHS-authored courses on FutureLearn. HEE is the lead partner, though all NHS organisations in the UK have the option to create courses and then make these available via the FutureLearn platform.The new partnership consolidates several existing partnerships between different NHS organisations and FutureLearn, to provide a unified experience for learners and making it easier for health and care organisations to create courses.

An introduction to the HEE Star: accelerating workforce redesign

We are hosting short, one-hour webinars to raise awareness and enhance understanding about the HEE Star – a proven methodology designed to tackle a broad range of health and care workforce challenges.

The webinar will give you a general overview and understanding of the HEE Star methodology demonstrating how and where it can be effectively used, and highlighting the benefits to your organisation and workforce.

Stroke training offers health professionals the support they need

HEE has launched its first multi-professional Stroke Training Guide in a bid to improve health and social care workers’ understanding and response to the condition.

A digitised version of the guide, the Stroke Toolkit, is now available. It offers consistent, credible, and helpful resources relating to stroke. This is underpinned by the Fundamentals of Acute Care and Treatment in Stroke (FACTS) elearning modules, which are linked to the Stroke Specific Education Framework (SSEF).

This has been launched alongside six rehabilitation videos, which cover possible cognitive and communication problems, functional independence, how a person’s mood may be affected, swallowing and appropriate positioning after stroke. Find out more on our Long Term Conditions programme page.

We have created a COVID-19 update webpage from October 2020 onwards. It will provide guidance and information from HEE, which applies to all students and trainees. This webpage also includes HEE COVID-19 surge guidance.

HEE training recovery animations released

HEE recently published a series of short animations to help keep doctors in training up to date with training recovery and explain how we are getting training back on track, flexible training opportunities available, and wellbeing resources. The second impact of COVID-19 survey is now live – please share with nursing, midwifery, and allied health professional (AHP) students

The second student impact of COVID-19 survey is now live and closes on Friday 18 June. This short survey has been designed to gather nursing, midwifery, and AHP student’s experience during the period November 2020– April 2021.

It builds on the first Impact of COVID-19 survey that took place in June 2020. The findings from this survey will be compared with those from 2020 and will help us to further understand the impact of COVID-19 on academic study and clinical learning outcomes. The survey should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete.

Funding boost to medical training

Doctors currently in training will be supported with funding from the government to help address the impact of the pandemic and ensure the NHS has access to the skills it needs to help tackle the training backlog.

We are working closely with the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the General Medical Council, NHSE/I, NHS Employers and individual college leads to get training back on track. To find out more, read the medical funding boost news story.

New UK Foundation programme curriculum 2021

The Foundation Programme curriculum, which underpins the training and professional development of newly graduated doctors, relaunches for the first time in five years this summer.

New nursing associates case studies

We have published additional nursing associate case studies which highlight the experiences of registered and trainee roles in older adults community mental health, primary care, and a nursing home for adults with physical disabilities.

New qualification to boost critical care workforce on track for roll out from September

We recently published an update on the progress with the recently announced new qualification for staff working in critical care.  The qualification for nurses announced in March has been released for tender with education providers and system providers invited to bid to run a standardised critical care training programme from as early as September 2021.

Maternity

Student midwife Expansion workshop

On Tuesday 6 July 9:00-12.00, we are holding a workshop to collaborate, share good practices, and develop ways to expand the number of student midwives across the region.

There will also be an opportunity to discuss Future Midwife NMC standards with Dr Jacqui Williams and HEE Lead Midwife Sally Ashton May. Other topics for the session include RePAIR, Return to Practice, and Apprenticeships. You can attend the workshop on the day by using this link.

New resources launched to support pharmacy careers

We have launched a new set of online resources to advise people who are considering a career in pharmacy. A Health Careers animation and interactive PDF can be found on the HEE website and include a range of useful information for anyone considering a pharmacy career.

Call for community pharmacies to take part in workforce survey

We encourage all community pharmacies to take part in a survey to help plan our future investment in education and training. The community pharmacies workforce survey launched earlier this month and is being carried out by the University of Manchester. It will help HEE and partners better understand the make-up of the community pharmacy workforce and inform future planning and system investment decisions.

Guide to practice based learning for AHP Students in Leadership

This guide details the possibilities and benefits of offering practice based learning (PBL) in leadership for AHP students. It includes key examples that we hope will help enable you to host leadership PBL for AHP students, to achieve their learning outcomes and enhance their professional skills and employability.

Dietetic roadmap consultation – Please share with networks

A First Contact Practitioner (FCP) is a diagnostic clinician working in Primary Care at the top of their clinical scope of practice. We are currently working with the British Dietetic Association to develop the First Contact Practitioner to Advanced Practitioner in Primary Care dietetic roadmap and looking for feedback by 20 June 2021.

HCPC Return to Practice – myth busting

The Return to Practice team for AHPs, healthcare scientists, and practising psychologists have selected the top questions they receive and answered in this campaign to bust the top myths around the programme, while proving useful answers aimed specifically at those thinking about returning to practice.

Developing the role of AHP Support Workers

We recently established an AHP support workforce programme to provide national leadership and support for recognising, developing and expanding the non-registered AHP workforce.

A draft AHP Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework is now being consulted until Friday 2 July 2021. We’re encouraging and inviting organisations, rather than individuals to respond via the online survey. You can find out more about the AHP Support Worker programme by visiting the  HEE website.

Chief Allied Health Professions Officer’s Awards are now open

Applications for the 2021 Chief AHPs Officer’s Awards are now open. The Chief AHPs Officers Awards highlight and celebrate the outstanding contribution made by AHP to improving health, care, and wellbeing for citizens and communities.  The application closes at midnight on Friday 31 July 2021. Offering trainees full grants for clinical endoscopist training

We are offering students and endoscopy services a flexible way to train healthcare professionals to perform safe endoscopic procedures. These fully funded 30 and 40-week blended learning programmes are run jointly with a trust. They provide clinical supervision, and all academic content is delivered online.

New national wound care core capabilities framework

We have published a new England-wide multi-professional framework that sets out the knowledge and skills needed by all levels of the health and social care workforce to deliver high quality, consistent wound care across all settings, improving healing rates and patient outcomes.

Study into the impact of emerging technology on the information profession

NHS Knowledge and Library Services in England has welcomed the publication of an independent report outlining ‘The impact of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, automation and robotics on the information professions.’ To find out more, read the emerging technology news story.

Co-designing an Artificial Intelligence capability framework for health and care

A number of high-profile organisations are collaborating with Health Education England and the University of Manchester to help shape the future of education and training in Artificial Intelligence.

Attendees including Babylon Health, Barclays, Google Health and Bupa recently came together to take part in a virtual workshop to help shape an AI capability framework, which will outline the knowledge, skills, behaviours and professional attributes that are needed by clinical professionals working in health and care.

Graduates into Health programme looking for NHS managers to help mentor future leaders in digital, data and technology

The Health Innovation Network’s Graduates into Health team has recruited over 70 graduates into 27 NHS organisations nationally through its NHS Graduate Digital, Data & Technology (DDaT) scheme and will be recruiting hundreds more in the next couple of years.

As part of the two-year scheme, commissioned by Health Education England and supported by NHSX, each graduate receives a mentor to help shape their development. The team is seeking NHS managers from a wide range of backgrounds (e.g., informatics, clinical, operational management) – to get involved contact lianne.onslow1@nhs.net.

There’s still chance to apply for forward thinking digital futures programme

HEE working in partnership with Yale University, USA are looking for the digital leaders of tomorrow who want to explore health and social care on an international scale to enable them to collaborate more effectively to deliver better outcomes for the populations they serve.

The programme is aimed at groups of senior leaders and each team should include a Local Authority lead, a senior educationalist and a senior clinician or manager from within a local health and social care system.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disabilities and Autism

The training is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training.

The training will ensure staff working in health and social care receive learning disability and autism training, at the right level for their role. They will have a better understanding of people’s needs, resulting in better services and improved health and wellbeing outcomes.

Health Education England is marking Care Month and Learning Disability Awareness week 14-20^th June to highlight the training and to also share information from the webpages.
