End-of-life care for all (e-ELCA) elearning programme launches hit 1 million

Posted on: September 16th, 2021 by Hannah Denness No Comments

The end-of-life care for all (e-ELCA) elearning programme has now been launched more than 1 million times.

e-ELCA sessions have been highlighted as a resource to help with implementation of the NICE Guidelines on improving care for people who are in their last days of life.

The programme aims to enhance the training and education of the health and care workforce so that well informed, high quality care can be delivered by confident and competent staff and volunteers to support people in all settings.

It is developed by HEE elearning for healthcare, in partnership with the Association for Palliative Medicine, and the 1 million milestone was passed earlier this month.

The programme and associated webpages have recently been completely restructured in response to user feedback. Changes have been implemented to aid navigation, highlight learning paths and comply with new HEE standards.

There are more than 170 interactive sessions which are grouped into 9 modules:

The programme also offers a number of learning paths which provide targeted learning for specific staff groups, defined curricula, and condition-specific end-of-life care.

Visit the end-of-life care programme page to find out more about the elearning programme and for details of how to access.

New learning path for foundation supervisors

Posted on: September 14th, 2021 by Hannah Denness No Comments

Health Education England (HEE) has developed a new resource for clinical and educational supervisors of foundation doctors.

Many individuals are involved in the development of a foundation doctor, including educational and clinical supervisors who play a key role in terms of guidance and support. It is important to ensure that they are trained to identify and meet the needs of those going through this level of medical training.

Training for the foundation supervisor supports the professional development of educators and includes video-based practical modules on topics such as supervision, feedback, workplace based assessments, dealing with doctors in difficulty and Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP).

Sessions may also be relevant to supervisors of speciality and GP trainees.

HEE has worked with elearning for healthcare (elfh) to review and update existing supervisor modules and create a new learning pathway which is available on the elfh Hub.

New Maternity Support Worker elearning programme now available

Posted on: August 18th, 2021 by Hannah Denness No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the Hillington Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the University of the West of England and Health Education England’s maternity team to develop a new Maternity Support Worker elearning programme.

The Maternity Support Worker programme is based on 4 modules which complement the Maternity Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework.

The 4 modules are:

  • Anatomy & Physiology: this session gives an overview of anatomy related to the role and case studies provide opportunities for learners to consider how to apply knowledge of physiology to their role and the care they provide
  • Immunisation: this module will aid an understanding of the immunisation programme in maternity, why vaccination is recommended and the vaccination schedule.
  • Legal and ethical frameworks: this session will explore the relevant legislation and national guidelines that inform practice and topics including confidentiality and duty of care.
  • Screening: this session focuses on a conversation between a Maternity Support Worker and an expectant mother and explores what screening is and why it is necessary.

More information, including access details, is available on the Maternity Support Worker programme page.

Updates to the Flu Immunisation elearning programme for the 2021/22 flu season

Posted on: August 5th, 2021 by Hannah Denness No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with Public Health England (PHE) to update the Flu Immunisation elearning programme to ensure it is up to date for the 2021/22 flu season.

With the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that this year’s annual flu vaccination programme is safely and effectively delivered to as many of those eligible as possible to protect those at risk.

Mathematical modelling has suggested that the forthcoming flu season could be up to 50% larger than typically seen in previous years and may also begin earlier than usual.

It is expected that the seasonal influenza virus will co-circulate with the COVID-19 virus during this winter and, as influenza activity levels were extremely low during the 2020/21 flu season, it is expected that there will be lower population immunity against influenza.

As social mixing and social contact returns towards pre-pandemic norms, it is crucial that those giving flu vaccines are confident, competent and have up to date knowledge about the vaccine(s) they are giving.

The Flu Immunisation elearning resource is designed to provide all healthcare practitioners involved in delivering the national flu immunisation programme with the knowledge they need to confidently promote high uptake of flu vaccination and administer the flu vaccines to those who need them.

The elearning course consists of 3 knowledge sessions and 3 assessment sessions. All those undertaking this elearning should complete the Core Knowledge session and accompanying assessment as this is designed to provide essential knowledge about what flu is and the rationale for, and design of, the annual flu programme. Depending on which session(s) is relevant to your role, you should then complete one or both subsequent knowledge and assessment sessions which provide more detailed information about the live and inactivated flu vaccines.

The Flu Immunisation programme is available to access on the elfh hub, ESR and via AICC links. For more information about the programme, including details on how to access, visit: www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/flu-immunisation/.

Foundation elearning programme update August 2021

Posted on: August 4th, 2021 by Hannah Denness No Comments

The Foundation curriculum has now changed and we have a new Foundation elearning programme which aligns all elearning sessions with the new 2021 curriculum.

F1 doctors starting in August 2021 and doctors becoming F2 in August 2021 were enrolled to the new Foundation elearning programme on 30 June 2021. The existing Foundation elearning programme, which aligns with the 2016 curriculum, was retired on 4 August 2021 and all history of previous sessions completed will be kept on the elearning for healthcare hub.

The Foundation elearning programme is an official resource designed specifically to support those completing the Foundation Curriculum and is available free via the elearning for healthcare (elfh) hub. Each session is mapped to the Foundation Curriculum and elearning material is designed to enhance and blend with the existing teaching within Foundation schools.

The material has been developed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in partnership with Health Education England elearning for healthcare and is approved by UKFPO.

Patient and Family Critical Care 360 Tour now available

Posted on: July 28th, 2021 by Hannah Denness No Comments

The London Transformation and Learning Collaborative (LTLC) has developed a resource to explain what it is like inside an intensive care unit (ICU) to help patients and their families.

ICU survivors and their families have created the Patient and Family Critical Care 360 Tour, together with LTLC and charity ICU Steps, by contributing to content and guiding the look and feel of the virtual environment.

The tour aims to help patients and families understand what happens within ICU and how unwell patients are cared for. It features different components including a guide to the types of staff who may be working within the ICU and views and sounds patients may experience from their hospital bed.

Tubes, wires and equipment that may feature are explained along with resources to assist survivors in making sense of their memories.

A similar resource for staff, Staff 360, is already available. The London Transformation and Learning Collaborative (LTLC) Critical Care programme page includes resources for healthcare professionals whose roles may have changed as part of the Coronavirus response.

LTLC has worked in partnership with Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) to develop these resources to support staff. To contact the team, email ltlc@hee.nhs.uk.

The charity ICU Steps can also be contacted for further advice and support.
